TITLE OF KEYNOTE SPEECH: The ERASMUS+ Mobility Barometer, 2014-2021 – Some important results

ABSTRACT: The European Association of ERASMUS Coordinators (EAEC) has been contributing for many years to the success of the ERASMUS mobility programmes. With the cooperation of the ERASMUS Unit of the European Commission, EAEC has developed an annual survey for monitoring trends in important elements of ERASMUS Mobility, including the International Mobility. The Barometer results indicating a comparative relation through the years of the 2014-2021 programme period are presented every year at the ERASMUS Congress and Exhibition (ERACON Congress) followed by a round table discussion. The presentation will highlight and discuss some of these results.

SHORT BIO: Professor Gregory Makrides, holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from IIT-Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, USA. He taught mathematics in HE for more than 20 years. He worked as a teacher trainer at the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute (1995-2000), as Dean of Enrolment Management at the University of Nicosia(2000-2006) and Director of Research and International Relations at the University of Cyprus(2006-2017) and in parallel he was the Executive Director of the European Office of Cyprus (2007-2016). From 2017-2020 he has been a visiting professor in several universities in Europe. Since 2021 is a professor of STEAME Education at the Pedagogical University of Krakow, Poland. He is the CEO of PROGNOSIS since March 2017 and president of THALES Foundation.

He has more than 150 publications in journals, conferences and in public press. He is the founder of several annual series of international educational events, most popular of which are: EUROMATH & EUROSCIENCE conference for school students, STEAME Summer Camps, European STEAME Conference, ERASMUS Congress(ERACON), CAREER-EU conference, the SEEMOUS Olympiad(South-Easter European Mathematics Olympiad for University Students), MATH & SCIENCE-Factor Europe Competitions for best oral communication of mathematics and sciences. He is the president of the following Associations: Cyprus Mathematical Society(CMS-since 1998), European Association of ERASMUS Coordinators(EAEC-since 2004), European Association of Career Guidance(EACG-since 2010), Mathematical Society of South-Eastern Europe(MASSEE 2013-2019), THALES Foundation of Cyprus (since 2007). Since 2017 is a member and since 2021 the vice-chair of the Education Committee of the European Mathematical Society.

His international recognition includes several awards, most recent the “2021 European Innovative Teaching Award (Project MATH-Labyrinthn)” and the “2022 Outstanding Leadership Award in Education” to be awarded at the EDUCATION 2.0 Conference in UAE.


Dr Salomi Papadima-Sophocleous

TITLE OF KEYNOTE SPEECH: Addressing Erasmus mobility participants’ linguistic skills & cultural awareness, and language teacher training needs through Curriculum Design Improvement

DATE/TIME: Monday, 13 December, 13:30-14:00 CET

ABSTRACT: The presentation aims to give insights into how to improve language teaching and cultural awareness of Erasmus+ KA 1 participants in their mobility through Second Language Curriculum Design (SLCD). Starting from the tools teachers are usually given, the presentation gives suggestions on how teachers can improve their existing curriculum with better design, based on current theories of learning, language teaching methods and SLCD. The suggestions are based on a curriculum design tailored to the particular students contextualized communicative interactive situations mobility participants will find themselves in. The presentation includes examples.

SHORT BIO: Salomi Papadima-Sophocleous (BA, GradCertEd, DipEd, MEd, MLit, PostGradDipCALL, and Dprof in Applied Linguistics – Online English Testing), Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) Language Centre Director & MA in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) Coordinator, retired May 31, 2021. Current position: Researcher, Cyprus Interactive Lab (CIL), Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts, CUT. Research interests: language teaching (ESP, Greek, and French), CALL, curriculum development and evaluation, language assessment, teacher education, and intercultural education.

TITLE OF KEYNOTE SPEECH: Learning opportunities abroad as a major driving force for educational excellence and innovation.

DATE/TIME: Monday, 13 December, 15:00-15:40 CET

ABSTRACT: A straightforward mandate from our Rector: “Our immediate priority of our internationalization strategy is to set up appropriate structures and policies that will allow every one of our students to have a learning experience abroad during their study at CUT.” During the presentation we will discuss the CUT approach to achieve high levels of inclusiveness and the implications to existing structures and policies rto meet such an ambitious goal.

SHORT BIO: Aristodimos Lanitis is the Head of the Erasmus International Mobility Office and Institutional Coordinator of the Erasmus KA1 programme at CUT. He is actively involved in the construction of the European University of Technology funded under the European Universities Initiative of the EU and leads the efforts of WP5 “Beyond Mobility: Feeling at home in every campus”.
